It’s taken me so long to do this post, but I’m excited to finally share it. It’s from the family summer trip mid-summer. Considering it’s now mid-autumn I have got to share it before the sunshine is a distant memory. This particular day was really fun and exciting for me because I’ve wanted to be a pirate for a very long time. I felt it was silly to have that aspiration without getting the chance to go out on the water, but here I am.
The opportunity presented itself when the Melbourne tall ship the Enterprize was in Portarlington during our family summer holiday. They did sails along the coastline three times a day and even gave you the chance to climb the rigging. On their final night at Portarlington we went for a sail.
I feel like I could have gotten very seasick. I didn’t, but my gosh! I can tell why people do. Being on the water is strange and wonderful. The wind, the spray of the water as it breaks off the bow, the smell of the sea. It was warm in the sun and hard to walk on the deck. It was disorienting to stare up at the sails towering above.
When I got the chance to climb the rigging, the crew kindly brought me out some trousers to wear. I climbed in my wedges, and dad climbed in bare feet, which he said was incredibly painful. Dad helped raise and lower the sails. Mum and I sat shoulder to should on the deck and stared out at the horizon in all directions.
We mostly took photos before and after the sail, because the ship was moving so much and because I often prefer to enjoy a moment without looking through the lens of a camera.
I did my hair a bit differently on this day too. I did it like my grandmother used to, by letting it dry and brushing it until became smooth and wavy. Not that you can really tell in all the windy ocean breeze.
